The Substance Film
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of advancing years. This Supernatural Story
The acclaimed director tests his creative boundaries with this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of a ghost. After a clan with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the youth on edge. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and locked up in a cellar, he anticipates a fatal end. However, the disconnected phone in the room repeatedly calls, with spooky callers offering help, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to depict the real-life figure with compassion. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4
