Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
