Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
