Cadillac Employs NASA Strategy to Build Squad from Scratch for Australian Grand Prix.

Approximately one year previously at the Nevada Grand Prix, Cadillac were at last awarded the green light as F1's newest entry for 2026. Building the squad from scratch has entailed a frenetic pace of work that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has likened to the NASA lunar mission. As Formula One descends on Las Vegas this race weekend, Cadillac are aware time is getting tight.

The Countdown to Melbourne

At the final race of the campaign to be hosted in the United States, with around three months to go before they make their debut for the inaugural time in Melbourne at the 2026 season opener, Cadillac have advanced rapidly but, in what must seem like a never-ending challenge, they are aware there will not be sufficient time.

The chief technical officer, Nick Chester, became part of the embryonic operation in the spring of 2023 soon after it was established, when the squad were without even an approved entry. He has been at its heart from that point and gets a amused expression when reflecting on the experience.

“You might get a brief moment reflecting at what you have accomplished and go: ‘Amazing, isn’t this fantastic what the team has created in a short three-year period,’” he says. “Then the very next instant you realize: ‘Well, we’ve still got a significant amount to do.’”

An Unprecedented Task

Nick Chester achieved victories at the Renault team in the driver Fernando Alonso's championship-winning years of 2005/2006 and was in control of engineering strategy at the recently formed Mercedes Formula E team, but no previous experience has quite compared with the task of introducing the quintessentially American Cadillac name, a works entry supported by the corporate entity, GM, into the pinnacle of motorsport.

“Creating an F1 team from nothing, when will you ever have the possibility to do that?” Chester remarks. “It is like nothing else. In an well-set team you don’t get the possibility to transform organizational mindset.”

With each day that passes focus are more focused on the looming critical moment in Melbourne and expectations are being set realistically.

“One must presume that any incoming team coming in is going to be last but merely participating will be an accomplishment in itself,” the team principal commented recently and while Chester shared this view he felt the organization had a reputation to build as well.
“Our primary goal we aim to demonstrate is that we belong on the grid,” he emphasizes. “So that we show up and we perform competently. We want to show that we’re a proper team doing the proper actions on the track. When we’ve shown that we’re really credible, then we will focus on forward movement subsequently.”

Driver Lineup and Team Building Drive

In the summer they recruited Sergio Pérez and Bottas as their racers for 2026, a pair distinguished for their priceless expertise in performing at the leading positions in two top-tier teams, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes, and Valtteri Bottas echoed the attitude of fighting spirit.

“Naturally, we are pragmatic,” Bottas stated. “We face a massive task to do, and it’s going to be almost certainly a challenging beginning, because it's the top level of motorsport. But our goal isn't to finish last. I believe with this setup, with this group, this staff, there is every reason that we can't manage to advance swiftly to a competitive level and enjoy some success.”

To realize that ambition staff acquisition has been in top gear, with employees now reaching more than 400 and intended to attain the target of 600 rapidly. Complementing their current base at Silverstone, the team are in the midst of building an headquarters at Fishers, Indiana in Indianapolis and there is the General Motors facility in North Carolina, where they are developing the plant to produce the 2029 engine, scheduled for 2029 – in the meantime they will run Ferrari engines – and the Toyota wind tunnel in Germany. It is a complex organisation, different from the direction in the sport for increased consolidation, and has led to the fresh organizational mindset to which the CTO referred to.

Apollo Blueprint

“It's closely based on the NASA moon mission,” said Graeme Lowdon shortly before the British GP in the summer. “We are pragmatic, we know how tough it is. The deadlines, they’re super, super, super short. Alright, we aren't launching a lunar mission, but it can seem that way.”

So they have embraced, instead of the traditional management structure, a flat management structure comparable to that of the space agency's, where there were a variety of specialist groups all tackling different aspects of the program in a variety of locations.

“When you must follow a protocol where a challenge emerges and they raise it up to their supervisor, that leader consults a manager somewhere else, it goes back down the chain, the process is very slow,” notes Nick Chester. “So we empower staff to take charge. Avoiding hierarchical consent for everything is far more efficient and quicker.”

The Future

The effectiveness of this flexible strategy will be evaluated in the pressure of racing when the season begins and there is a significant degree on the line for F1, too. Cadillac have taken on as their development driver the 25-year-old American Colton Herta
